What To Do After Had An Accident
- Take some deep breaths. Do some self-evaluation. Are you injured? Are you bleeding? Do you know where you are or what happened? If you are dizzy, sit down away from traffic.
- Is there is a chance your car could be hit again? If you can safely exit your car, get away from it. If you are not that badly hurt and have accident warning devices like flares or triangles, put them out on the road to warn other drivers. It is generally best not to move the car and to let the police and other emergency personnel investigate what happened with the cars still in their resting places following the accident.
- Answer the police honestly. But if you are dazed or confused, let them know you need medical treatment and answer only what you feel sure about. Remember, your statements can and will be used against you if you admit fault. It will be too late later to say that you didn’t know what you were saying. If you don’t know what you are saying, don’t speak.
- Get the names and addresses of any witnesses before they leave the scene. If they are leaving, get their car license plate numbers.
- Get the other drivers’ information including their names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, make and model of their vehicles, license plate numbers, and their insurance company name, and policy number.
- If you have a camera in the car and aren’t lying on a backboard about to be taken to the hospital, take photographs of the vehicles and the scene. If you can’t do it at this point due to your injuries or lack of a camera, do it later after you have obtained medical treatment.
- If you are hurt, obtain medical treatment. Don’t decline the ambulance or hospital treatment to save your insurance company money. Take your valuables out of your car if you can and go to the hospital and get checked out. If you are not hurt, don’t get treatment that you don’t need. However, remember, after an accident you may be feeling a rush of adrenaline. If some hours later you begin to feel pain, get medical treatment immediately. If you need to, call your insurance company for the okay to obtain immediate treatment and to learn where you should go for the treatment.
