Insurance coverages are confusing even to many attorneys. Here is a little guide to the most important insurance coverages that are available. If you do not have these insurance coverages, ask your agent what they would cost to add them to your policy.
LIABILITY
Also sometimes referred to as “bodily injury liability.” This coverage pays for personal injuries suffered by others as a result of your fault.
PROPERTY DAMAGE
Pays for property damage claims caused by you in your vehicle.
MEDICAL PAYMENTS
One of the cheapest and most important coverages to purchase. Pays reasonable medical expenses, up to the limits you purchase, for treatment of your injuries and the injuries of your passengers. Good to have even if you have health insurance as this will pay for treatments your health insurance policy often will not. Watch out for “Excess Medical Payments Coverage.” This type of medical payments coverage pays only for bills that your medical insurance, if you have any, does not pay.
COMPREHENSIVE
Pays for damage to your vehicle caused by fire, theft, but excludes collision (see below).
COLLISION
This coverage pays for collision damage to your vehicle. The insurance company however, will subtract your deductible which may be $500, $1000 or more. The higher the deductible the less you will pay for this coverage, but the more that will come out of your pocket to repair your vehicle if you back into a light pole, for instance.
UNINSURED/UNDERINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE
This is the one you want to make sure you have plenty of. This coverage pays for your bodily injuries, pain and suffering, wage loss and other damages, but only up to the amount you purchase, if your accident has been caused by an uninsured motorist, and underinsured motorist, or by a hit and run vehicle if there was impact to your vehicle.
CAR RENTAL AND TOWING
Depending upon the amount of coverage purchased, pays for a number of days of car rental up to a specified dollar amount per day, and for towing expenses.
